There have been lots of speculations going on around about Social Media being the new trend for SEO in 2011. Just recently, Google's Matt Cutts answered the question about the ongoing speculation.
Cutts said YES, they are using Twitter and Facebook as a 'ranking signal'. However it may sound very simple but it is not. Cutts added that they are currently studying the process about 'Social Ranking' and that they are looking into ways to determine the reputation of an author through their Facebook and Twitter posts.
Although Cutts did not elaborate on how the process will work, it would be best to look for opportunities and expand your Social Media strategies. This might very well be a great factor that affects how Google ranks websites in the near future.
This recent statement from Cutts did not come as a surprise though for most web marketing consultant and experts as this was already being anticipated.
Just recenty, it has been observed that people who have more followers on both Twitter and Facebook gets their posts indexed almost instantly after they are published. It means that search engines, especially Google, are closely monitoring of such people.
Cutts also mentioned that 'quality' is still being prioritized as compared to 'quantity'. He also added that websites hould also allow Google to crawl their sites. Reputation is also key, so tweets and posts by 'reputable' authors would be essential.
This process, as mentioned by Cutts, is used 'relatively lightly' by Google. For now, it seems. So we'll just have to wait in see on how this really works and try to add it in our internet marketing solutions list for us to increase our site's rankings.
